Meet our 2007 Campaign Chair, Larry Harris:

UAS Dean of Education

September 2007

Dear Southeast Alaska Community,

This is a very significant time of year for all of us in Southeast Alaska. Yes, it is football season. Yes, we are making preparations for winter. But those aren't the real reasons this is a significant time. On September 17, the United Way of Southeast Alaska will start its annual campaign to raise funds to support our member agencies. What does this mean for each of us?

First, this is our opportunity to make a pledge that will support our friends, neighbors, and even those we don't know who live with us in this wonderful part of the world. This is the time when we can make a commitment that will help us create a better world for all.

Second, this is the time when we can make a pledge to support all of the agencies or just a single agency in the United Way family. Watch for the pledge forms and payroll deduction opportunities at work.

The United Way board of directors set a lofty goal for this year, $325,000. With your help and your support we will be able to reach it. Please consider your gift when one of your colleagues or friends calls on you.

the United Way campaign lets us demonstrate the strong community we have in Southeast Alaska. Remember: The power of caring. The power of you. The power of United Way. Join me and others in making a difference this year.

Sincerely, Larry B. Harris, 2007 Campaign Chair

2007 Campaign “Talking Points”
  • This year is United Way of Southeast Alaska’s 28th Anniversary.
  • Campaign theme: The power of caring. The power of you. The power of United Way.
  • Goal: 80% participation. Organizations that achieve this goal will receive public recognition in newspaper ads and at our grand finale celebration.
  • Through collaborative action, United Way and our partners have impacted nearly 63,000 people in Southeast Alaska this year. Your gift stays here, working to improve lives and communities.
  • You decide where your money goes. On your pledge form, simply select United Way’s Community Impact Agenda, or one of our 38 local nonprofit partner agencies, or your Southeast community.
  • United Way uses your funds effectively. Only 14% of your donation is spent on administrative costs, compared to the national standard of 25%.
  • You help identify and implement long-term solutions to community problems.
  • With just one gift to United Way, you support 38 carefully selected nonprofits pursuing solutions to local health and social service challenges. With one gift, you join a community-wide effort to make life better for all.

You can donate individually or through payroll deduction at your workplace. If you need information about your company's campaign or are interested in starting a workplace campaign, email Kristin Mahle: campaign@unitedwayseak.org or contact her by phone: 907-463-5530.

United Way of Southeast Alaska holds itself accountable not just for action but also for results. We are driven by the commitment to make a real difference in the communities we serve.

The power of caring.
