2008 Community Impact Grants
Juneau, Alaska February 12, 2008 -
United Way of Southeast Alaska announces Community Impact
Grant awards totaling $46,100 to eighteen partner agencies.
The projects were selected by a volunteer committee of the board of
directors, from a pool of 25 proposals. The total amount of requests
was $73,723.54.
The grant money is based on funds designated by
donors in Fall 2006 to the United Way of Southeast Alaska's
Community Impact General Fund or to one of the four Areas of Care:
Helping Children and Youth Succeed; Supporting the Elderly and
People with Disabilities; Promoting Wellness and Self-sufficiency;
or Meeting the Basic Needs of People in Crisis.
The recipients and their projects are listed
below:
- The Four A’s (Alaskans Aids Assistance
Association) received $3000 for Rapid HIV testing
- American Red Cross received $3000
to teach disaster training to youth in Southeastern schools
- AWARE received $3,000 for Girls on
the Go!
- Brave Heart Volunteers was formerly
known as Sitka Faith in Action and needed $1,600 to help them
with branding their new organization.
- Catholic Community Service Hospice and
Home Health: $3,000 for Hospice and Home Care visitations
for those unable to pay for it.
- Gastineau Human Services received
$3,000 for a program to help clients transition with the support
of their families.
- Helping Hands needed $3,000 to
purchase a new perishable goods cooler.
- Juneau Youth Services was given
$2,100 for equipment to teach youth yoga.
- Ketchikan Homeless Shelter received
$1,600 to replace an Emergency Fire Door to bring it up to code.
- LOVE Inc. received $3,000 for
Client Vouchers.
- PATCHWORKS- for the TALK (Teens and
Adults Linking in Ketchikan) program $1,600
- Planned Parenthood of Alaska
received $1,600 towards the purchase of an Electro Surgical
Generator for LEEP Procedures in Sitka.
- REACH received $3,000 for an
inter-agency project of the Partnerships for Families and
Children called Blanket of Wellness.
- Salvation Army - Ketchikan was
granted $3,000 to help purchase a walk-in freezer.
- SAIL receive $3,000 towards
Outreach Impact to take services to Kake, Angoon, Hoonah,
Metlakatla, Skagway, Petersburg, Wrangell and Prince of Wales.
- SERRC received $3,000 for teaching
basic English Language Learning
- Sitkans Against Family Violence
received $3,000 to implement a new Theatre for Living event to
combat violence, racism or other social issue.
- Zach Gordon Teenage Club was given
a grant of $1,600 to help purchase new kitchen appliances and
fixtures.
United Way of
Southeast Alaska is a volunteer-driven organization that creates
lasting change by bringing people and resources together to address
community-wide issues. For 28 years, UWSEAK has helped nurture
children and youth, care for the elderly and people with
disabilities, promote wellness and self-sufficiency, and meet the
basic needs of people in crisis. UWSEAK is a member of the
United Way of America system that includes nearly 1,400
community-based United Way organizations. Each is independent,
separately incorporated, and governed by local volunteers.
