2005 Community Impact Grants

United Way of Southeast Alaska (UWSEAK) has awarded $41,254 in Community Impact Grants to fund projects submitted by eight partner agencies, in addition to grants funding the Day of Caring and disaster relief programs coordinated by the American Red Cross and United Way of America.

"We are extremely excited about the types of projects that will be completed this year as a result of the granting process. Each one responds to an issue our community has indicated as important," remarked Michelle Casey, who chairs the UWSEAK Community Impact Committee.

United Way Community Impact Grant recipients and their projects include:

  • Boys & Girls Club of Juneau: With $1,500 the club will implement a Teen Outreach Program that will serve approximately 30 youth ages 14-18.
  • Cancer Connection: $1,500 helped to fund the Men's Health Forum to enhance cancer education, awareness and prevention in March 2006.
  • Catholic Community Service: Southeast Senior Services in Kake received $1,344 to purchase a freezer, to store donated and bulk food that will provide elders with nutritious and well prepared meals.
  • Ketchikan Homeless Shelter: $2,800 will replace old bunk beds and mattresses that have been in use since the shelter opened in late 1973.
  • American Red Cross: In response to Hurricane Katrina, $10,000 was given to the Southeast Alaska chapter to help defray costs incurred from the disaster relief efforts.
  • Rendezvous Senior Day Services: $1,800 provided colorful dinnerware and a new dining table for seniors enrolled in daycare.
  • SAGA: The Challenge Ropes Course, which has served thousands of youth, teens, and adults, was repaired and improved with a grant of $3,000.
  • Sitka Counseling and Prevention Services, Inc: $3,000 funded training for a range of nonprofits in Sitka on counseling and education to stop domestic violence.
  • Sitka's Faith in Action (SFIA): $2,974 sent the Program Director and a facilitator to a bereavement support group facilitator training.
  • United Way of Southeast Alaska: Continuing its focus on developing volunteerism in the community, United Way of Southeast Alaska sponsored a Day of Caring on October 6, 2005, which deployed approximately 200 volunteers to complete projects at 17 local agencies. UWSEAK budgeted $3,336 to cover event expenses.
  • United Way of America: A $10,000 grant supported the United Way of America Hurricane Katrina Response fund, which was activated to help affected communities begin rebuilding their lives.

Be the change.
