United Way of Southeast Alaska
Brief History

For 27 years, the United Way of Southeast Alaska (UWSEAK) has worked with its partner agencies to help children and youth succeed, care for the elderly and people with special needs, strengthen families and individuals, and meet the basic needs of people in crisis. Incorporated in 1979, UWSEAK continues to serve several of its original agencies, such as the Glory Hole, A.W.A.R.E., Boy Scouts and Hospice.

United Way of Southeast Alaska is a volunteer-driven, grass-roots organization that creates lasting positive change by bringing people and resources together to address community-wide issues. In 1984, United Way of Southeast Alaska joined the United Way of America system that includes nearly 1,400 community-based United Way organizations. Each is independent, separately incorporated, and governed by local volunteers. During the 2003-2004 campaign year, United Ways across the country collected more than $3.6 billion to help build stronger communities.

Since 1994, UWSEAK's annual campaigns have generated steadily increasing resources. The 2004 private campaign yielded $205,850 in gifts, pledges, and in-kind contributions, for an 87% increase over the 2003 campaign. Compared to the private campaign's 10-year average of $154,716, the 2004 results were 33% higher than average. Including grant funds and public employee campaigns, United Way's combined gifts, pledges and support in 2004 totaled $633,252.
