Juneau, AK, April 12, 2005 – The Juneau
Homeless Coalition will present an educational forum at the next
meeting of the Juneau Assembly’s Social Services Advisory Board
(SSAB), on Wednesday, April 27, at 5:15 p.m., in the Downtown
Library’s large conference room. The meeting is open to the
public.
Members of the Juneau Homeless Coalition will
discuss the work of their individual agencies and will examine the
range of challenges and resources facing the homeless in Juneau.
With awareness and education as their primary goal, coalition
panelists will explain the demographics of homelessness, seeking to
dispel commonly held stereotypes. The goal of the event is to
develop a more sophisticated understanding of the homelessness
“system,” and especially of the ways local agencies work together to
meet the varied needs of the homeless. The forum will include
time for questions and open discussion.
Participating panelists include representatives
of AWARE, St. Vincent de Paul, The Glory Hole, Juneau Youth
Services, the Zach Gordon Youth Center, Juneau Alliance for Mental
Health, Housing First, and Gastineau Human Services, among others.
The Social Services Advisory Board, composed of seven community
volunteers, makes annual recommendations to the City and Borough of
Juneau Assembly regarding allocations of the City’s health and
social services block grant. In this capacity, the board seeks
broad community input regarding Juneau’s assets and needs, and
serves as an advocate for the support of effective and sustainable
social services. |
