BP Awards $25,000 to United Way of Southeast
Alaska to Launch Leadership Juneau
Among key concerns from the 2005 Compass research, Juneau
residents expressed a strong desire for greater civic engagement,
improved cross-cultural understanding and communication, and
enhanced opportunities for volunteerism. To respond to these
community aspirations, United Way is partnering with BP to launch
the first annual Leadership Juneau program in 2007.
Based on a nation-wide community leadership education movement,
the program will prepare 20-25 participants to serve as the next
wave of Juneau's nonprofit board members, elected officials, and
community organizers. A distinguishing feature of Leadership Juneau
is its commitment to an independent stance with regard to community
issues, as we seek to broaden the base of leadership and the
community’s capacity for creative, collaborative problem-solving.
Leadership Juneau class members typically will be early- to
mid-career individuals with demonstrated leadership potential, who
will be poised to benefit from intensive training that provides
access to various community sectors, as well as mainstream movers
and shakers. Leadership Juneau participants will come from
government, small businesses, corporations, nonprofit agencies,
industry, health care and educational institutions, and many other
sectors.
"The $25,000 BP grant is a tremendous investment in the
leadership capacity of Juneau and Southeast Alaska. We are very
grateful for this generous support of United Way's new program,"
said Kim Garnero, chair of the United Way Board of Directors.
