Juneau, AK, March 30, 2007 -- The Board of Directors of United
Way of Southeast Alaska (UWSEAK) is pleased to announce the
selection of Brenda Hewitt as the agency’s new President.
Having conducted an extensive search, the Board is delighted that
she will lead UWSEAK, beginning April 2.
Hewitt, a long-time Alaskan, holds a masters
degree in political management from George Washington University in
Washington DC. She lived in Juneau and Haines from 1986-1995.
Most recently she owned her own public relations and marketing firm
in Fairbanks and has worked in nonprofit fundraising, served as an
executive director of the UAF Alumni Association, and has
volunteered on local and statewide boards for more than 30 years.
Hewitt succeeds Jodi Kilcup, UWSEAK’s President
since 2004, who moved out of state for personal reasons. After
Kilcup’s move, dedicated board member and former Board Chair, Chuck
Collins, stepped in to lead the agency as the interim President last
fall until a successor to Dr. Kilcup could be hired.
“I am really excited about coming back to
Southeast,” said Hewitt. “The chance to work with citizens and
agencies to strengthen the communities throughout Southeast will be
a wonderful opportunity.”
Kim Garnero, a member of the Search Committee
and UWSEAK’s current Board Chair, noted that “We are excited to have
Brenda Hewitt join us. We believe her skills, background, and
positive attitude are just what we need to help build our community
through the collective efforts of United Way of Southeast Alaska and
our 37 member agencies. We are also thankful that Chuck
Collins was able to put his personal energy into keeping the
organization healthy and moving forward since Jodi Kilcup’s
departure.”
United Way of Southeast Alaska is a
volunteer-driven grass-roots movement that creates lasting change in
communities by bringing together the people and resources to address
community-wide issues. Incorporated in Juneau in 1979, the
United Way of Southeast Alaska is an independent organization run by
local volunteers but linked to 1,400 other United Way agencies
throughout the country. The United Way of Southeast Alaska
partners with 37 member agencies to build a coalition of social
service non-profits to help build a strong community through
improving lives.
The United Way invests community contributions
strategically in programs that nurture children and youth, care for
the elderly and people with special needs, strengthen families and
individuals, and meet the basic needs of people in crisis. The
organization brings the Southeast communities together to look at
the most urgent needs and do what it takes to improve lives. |
