- We are a volunteer-driven, grass-roots
movement that creates lasting change in our
communities by bringing together the people and
resources to address community-wide issues.

- Incorporated in 1979, we still serve several
of our original member agencies, such as the
Glory Hole, A.W.A.R.E., the Boy Scouts and
Hospice.

Alaska is independent yet connected to a national
movement |
| |
- In 1984, United Way of Southeast Alaska joined
the United Way of America system that includes
nearly 1,400 community-based United Way
organizations. Each is independent, separately
incorporated, and governed by local volunteers.
In recent years, United Ways across the country
have collected more than $3.5 billion to help
build stronger communities.

- Today, we count 38 nonprofits as United Way
member agencies. For a current list, click on

United Way convenes monthly meetings of the
Nonprofit Leadership Council, to help nonprofits
communicate and collaborate more effectively.
Our Volunteer Center works to match agency needs
with community members' skills and interests.

community -- people from government, business,
faith groups, and nonprofits, as well as
not-so-ordinary citizens -- to tackle the issues
that matter most. What sets us apart is our

- We invest community contributions strategically in
programs that nurture children and youth, care for
the elderly and people with special needs,
strengthen families and individuals, and meet the
basic needs of people in crisis. We bring our
communities together to look at our most urgent
needs and do what it takes to improve lives.

- The most important resource we have is people --
those whom we serve and all of us who volunteer, who
work, who invest, and who care about making a
long-term change in community conditions. Compass
II, our community-wide research project, helps us
identify local perceptions of our most important
community assets and most urgent needs. United Way
works with partners to focus on these issues and get
results.

- The contributions donors and volunteers make
through United Way are investments in their
communities. You trust us to be effective, efficient
and good stewards of your investments. overhead of
17% is well below the 35% threshold recommended for
nonprofits by the Better Business Bureau.

Together, we have far more power to improve our
community than we do alone. At United Way, we hold
