About Leadership Juneau

Leadership Juneau, facilitated by United Way of Southeast Alaska, is an annual program designed to attract, encourage, instruct, and engage a next wave of Juneau community leaders. In response to the 2005 Compass II Community Building Assessment that indicated a need for Juneau to improve its “social capital” by encouraging more dialogue among people of differing views, Leadership Juneau accepted its first participants in 2008.
Each year between 10-15 future community leaders are selected to participate in Leadership Juneau’s five month service learning program. Participants are challenged to increase their understanding of the community in which they live and work, learn how to respond effectively to community issue, and work collaboratively with varying personalities to produce positive results. Participants become part of a unique network of concerned citizens, taking an active role in influencing quality of life in Juneau, Alaska.
Leadership Juneau's challenging curriculum focuses on three main areas:
- Leading: Leadership Juneau is dedicated to developing future community leaders. Our goal is to empower participants to become more effective advocates for positive change in the community.
- Learning: Participants will receive leadership training, local experiential learning opportunities, and the chance to better understand the region's government, business, and non-profit communities. Interaction with fellow participants and local community leaders will lead to a greater, more complete picture of the city.
- Community Impact: Participants will apply their emerging skills during a community impact project. Small groups will each identify a community need and produce a project that results in the betterment of our society.
Organizations sponsoring participants in Leadership Juneau benefit from the broadened perspectives and enhanced potential of those individuals who complete the program and return to their jobs with a heightened level of community awareness and participation.
Leadership Juneau is a member of the Community Leadership Association.
